Gujarati is the official language of Gujarat state, on the west coast of India, with an area of 196,024 square kilometers. Within the Republic of India, Gujarat borders with Rajasthan, Madhyapradesh, and Maharashtra; it also borders with Pakistan to the northwest.

Gujarati – A popular language of the world 

While the language of Gujarat is called Gujarati, the people of the State are also called by the same name – Gujaratis. As the  native language of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation,Gujarati has a  natural claim to world-wide interest . It is one of the 22 official  and 14 regional languages spoken in India, and one of the languages spoken in Pakistan as well !  There are about 46 million speakers of Gujarati worldwide, making it the 23rd most spoken language in the world.  

Of these, roughly 45.5 million reside in India, 150,000 in Uganda, 250,000 in Tanzania, 50,000 in Kenya and roughly 100,000 in Pakistan. Gujarati is the chief language not only of Gujarat state, but also the adjacent union territories of formerly Portuguese Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. It is also spoken in Bangladesh, Fiji, Malawi, Mauritius, Oman, Singapore, South Africa, United Kingdom, USA, Zambia, Zimbabwe. Gujrati literature has a rich tradition and is widely translated into major world languages by renowned translators.  Large number of world famous books are translated into Gujarati also.
